Most definitely because it gets really hot in the Summer here, frequently over 100 degrees. This past summer we saw 100 plus degree days for almost the whole month of August!

Most people will say it is because it is hot but that is not the case....This term refers to the population spike after the Summer Olympics was held in Atlanta in 1996. 2 million people in the metro area grew to 5 million strong in the next 6 years....now thats impressive.
BUT the origin of the nickname was first coined in the 60s with a song name "Hot-lanta" by the Allman Brothers referring to the popularity of the city.

Because of the stifling heat and humidity we experience during the summer months. Strangely enough, I never, ever hear Atlanta residents refer to our city as "Hotlanta", nor "The A.T.L.". It always seems to be people who don't live here.

Or Los Angeles is named the City Of Angels
Or New Orleans being the Big Easy
It's just a nickname that stuck. It refers more so to the nightlife. Everything about it is "hot" Hot music, hot parties, hot places...it has nothing to do with weather. More of a hot, as in tight.

Heat, humidity- - but also it is the biggest city for miles around. If you want a cultural event, party, club, etc.; Atlanta is a likely place.
