Since when did they stop?

I started with the WI State Patrol in 1991, and they didn't do it then. The sheriff of Milwaukee County at the time didn't want them there, as it effects the manpower of the sheriff's department.

By Wisconsin Statutes, the sheriff is the primary law enforcement officer for the county, so the state honored his request. Since then, the state has some budget and manpower problems too, so I doubt they ever pushed the issue.

School Bus inspectors employed by the State Patrol still work in Milwaukee County, but the Troopers do not.

Wis State patrol can patrol anywhere is WIs. They may have an "understanding" to patrol only when needed.

Trooper hit it perfectly. The Milwaukee Co. Sheriff has limited roles because of all Milw. Co. municipalities having their own Law Enforcement Agencies there would be needless overlap if they patroled the County.

Right now, they patrol the major highways and County facilities as well as operate the Jail.
