Searcher: I'm actually mocking some of the responses to your question. Personally, I thought your question was excellent and your point was well-stated. (I disagree with it, though.)

Yes and no.

Because of our group identity and abstract thinking, plus our natural fear of death and curiosity and tendency for anthropomorphism, we tend to create gods. So, you could say that our bias to create gods is genetic.

However, that is just our genetic disposition to create such fantasies.

The reason children tend to have the same religion as their parents is also genetic, but in a different way. Children are hardwired to mimic their parents. At a young age, children have a strong predisposition to believe what their parents tell them. That's why, for example, it is easy for children to believe that Santa exists and why it is often so hard on them when they find out their parents lied about that. The same holds true of religion. If you teach a child a religious superstition at a young age, that child will tend hold that belief through adulthood. This is why religions heavily target children.

It's not genetic; it's a lot like smoking: Get kids hooked at an early age, otherwise they might not take it up in adulthood.

No it is not. Religion is a set of ideas. There is nothing genetic about it. Of course, being exposed to a certain set of ideas since birth leads to a greater probability of following it. BTW, where did you get that 80% figure? Is there some study about this?
