My engagement ring was handed down from my fiances family so I would like to keep it. I can get it on my finger, but it is very hard to get it off. I am worried about getting it enlarged because I don't want it to be noticable. I have had rings made smaller and noticed where it was cut on the back. Has anyone had their ring enlarged and been happy with it? What is the aveage cost to go up a size?
I will have it looked at and ask for an estimate, but I live a distance from any jewler and do not get there often. Please give me your thoughts. Thanks so much

wow, thanks for the answers. I have had only one ring sized (made smaller) and was dissapointed in the way it was done. This ring was previously made smaller, do you think it will affect it when sizing it again? I am really worried about ruining it.

There are two ways to enlarge a ring and both methods depend of course how much will they have to be enlarged, if it's not too much you can have the ring pulled out making it wider but if it's a lot they need to cut the back and add more gold, take it to a good jeweler and he will fix it right.

Yes, I've had rings enlarged. It is not noticable if you have a good jeweler.
The price depends on how much enlarging needs to be done. I had mine enlarged 1 size (from a 3 to a 4) and it was $45. And of course, each jeweler is different.
What pisses me off is when you have a ring downsized. Not only do they charge you for it, but they keep the extra gold! How unfair is that?

Making a ring larger is much easier than making it smaller. They just heat the metal and stretch it a bit. A qualified jeweler should be able to do this quickly, cheaply and with no damage to your ring. I had my aunts ring enlarged half a size and it cost me around 10 dollars.

Most Jewellery stores can do this for you they make the cut on the underside of the ring so you will be the only one that knows also it is usually very faint so it will be hard to notice.
Talk to a local jeweller an they may do it or they may send it off to get down either way enlarging or making smaller it is an easy task.

My husband and I had our rings sized to our fingers (mine smaller his larger). I never saw a cut in the ring - so I think it's important to find a quality jeweler who knows what they are doing. When enlarging the ring they melt and stretch so there shouldn't be any lines. It cost us between $25-$50 to have it done. (That was in June 2007).

I feel your pain thats the same with my class ring
Its to small to get off my finger at the end of the day ; )
but what they said I could do was send it back to the company to get it resized for free
What you can do is ask your Fiances Family where the ring came from and call them up and see if you can get it resized for you.
But since its a generational passing of the ring - the company might not be open... then I would just call the jewler and ask what are the different methods to enlarge a ring.

i had my gold engagement ring sized up 1/2 a size because it never ever fit in the first place. it was really cheap--about $30, and there is no mark or anything (I just checked). Also, some jewelers are really weird about not sizing and fixing jewelry they didn't make. I went to a local hand crafted jewelry store and he did an awesome job.
