A point of clarification is in order. That tasty critter by the side of the road is a POSSUM. Opossum is what what you say just as you veer right to "collect" dinner. As in "Oh! Possum!".
Are we clear on that? Good.
Now about your question about the best barbecue sauce. A lot of the would depend on you personal taste. Not to mention if you are going to roast it or bake it. There are many tasty recipes available on the Internet. However the classic is still, and always will be, about 2 gallons of vinegar, 4 cloves of garlic and about a pound and a half of ketchup for a 3 pound possum. Salt to taste.
I hope this helps.

I tend to go with Daddies brown sauce.
Just blends in nicely with the slightly 'nutty' taste of the 'possum.

Well, shucks, dad burn it, I thought everybody knew that a southern musterd sauce is the best. This also works for the armadillo, or possum in the half shell.MMMMM
