It's a simple question. Has the world benefitted from atheism's existance? If so, in what way?

As I expected, for many of you the only way to answer this question was to avoid the question entirely and throw mud on religion. Where's the rational thinking?

The crowning achievements continue as long as science prooves things that dispute the Bible - it has made a lot of gaps in the Bible and will continue to do so. If you clipped out everything that has been disproven from the Bible you would end up with a cover - front and back.

I guess we can't lay claim to mass executions, repression of thought, torture, mutilations, cover-ups. The church has all that covered, right? Maybe if we stopped grouping ourselves into 'us' and 'them', everybody could be a little happier?

Atheism always was and always will be, you don't need to ponder its achievements; it's simply a recognition that there is no god.

Atheism is not a religion like the other organized religions. It is only a belief system. Many atheists have done a lot for this world. What has religion done? Nothing but mayhem and murder.

Just the fact that most of our greatest scientists, inventors, innovators, ethical businessmen etc. of today and time past are atheists and agnostics. They are the true movers of progress. It's also seems apparent just how some of these men and women who are pioneers in different fields of science and technology would rather avoid the subject of religion, for them it's a waste of time, sometimes they would say they are associated to a certain religion but obviously not in practice. They are the ones whose research and contribution to society are often regulated, or controlled or stopped by government or religious authorities.
Copernicus for example, and there are numerous others.

Yeah, science.
A disbelief in gods and all the "answers" religion provided caused people to go out and search for REAL answers and information. Thus, science and a REAL understanding of everything, was born.
