I'm going to get a cat and am trying to plan for the monthly costs. How much litter does an average adult cat go through in a month?

With five adult cats and one box we were going through 4 bags of clay litter that weighed 20 pounds each, for $2.25 a bag.

With three cats, it's only 2 bags a month (we lost one to cancer and another to heart disease). It's the fourth cat that 's added which makes a huge difference in the box.

Figure for one cat you'll use about 5 pounds of litter a week at most if you scoop every time the surface is disturbed and if it's the clay type. I think you go through more with the clumping kind.

The best litter you can get is the litter crystals, they are clean, and one bag will last for 1 month. They are usually about $7 a bag. But I still think that you should change the litter twice a month, that equals $14 a month =)

it depends on you cat ,or cats if you have more than one, and its habits

i have 3 cats (all housecats) and i go through 3 40lb bags of litter a month

a friend of mine has 4 cats (that go outside) and usually she will use anywhere between 20 and 40lbs a month, depending on the weather and how often her cats beg to go out.

personally, i would rather spend the extra cash for the extra litter and keep the cats as indoor only cats, its much safer for them in so many ways, and i believe it helps them to live longer (my oldest cat is 18 years only)

When I had Three Cats I would go through about 2 large buckets of litter ( around 22 lbs.) a month, now that I only have one cat I am going through about 1 bucket every six weeks.

I use and highly recommend Feline Pine, it doesn't have the same stinky "kitty litter" smell as other litter and it is better for your cat and the environment. If you have only one cat and make sure that you scoop daily you can use one bag of feline pine for a month. Go to Wal-Mart or Target to buy as the specialty pet stores (i.e. Petco, Petsmart) that sell it charge an astronomical price. Target charges about $4 a bag (one small bag per month) and Wal-Mart is about $3 a bag.

it depends what size of liiter tub you buy, and how much it costs. i buy a medium sized tub of litter, that costs about 7 dollars, and i clean my cats litter box about every 3 days, so i usually go through 2 tubs of litter. so thats about 14 dollars. hope this helps!

I would say 1 bag of litter for a month should be right for one cat.
