I have an 07 Jeep Liberty. Not a very heavy vehicle. Plan taking a lot of trips to Vail and Winter Park, CO soon. Please share your knowledge with me.

Snow chains are always better than cables. They're more durable. Snow cables were designed for front wheel drive cars mainly that have low clearance issues where chains would not fit. A good set of tires is a good idea too.

Snow Chains Vs Cables

I would assume that because it is a highly travelled road you would not need the chains, but if you need an opinion then chains would be better. The reason is that chains are designed to dig into the ice and snow and provide grip whereas cable has less grip because there are no 2 way teeth like a chain would have. Hope this helps.

I have seen cables wrapped in a clear tubing that I have not seen do well at all. To me (this is only my theory) is that the tubing would rotate around the cable and not provide any traction.

Growing up my father had chains with large V shaped teeth, about 6 per chain and they gripped exremely well.

If I needed snow/ice chains I would go with some with teeth, but I am not sure what all is available as my fathers were purchased 20+ years ago.

The main difference is durability. Cables do not last as long as chains.
