I'd like to take a random sampling of all users, so please get out a coin and flip it, letting it fall to the floor. If it comes up heads, you'll answer the question below, if tails, you won't. I know this is not a true random selection, but it's good enough for my purpose, which is to determine the ratio of believers to unbelievers in this forum. The question, therefore, is are you a believer or an unbeliever? One word answers, if you please.

The only time flipping a coin increases accuracy is if you think you will have trouble getting honest answers.

For instance, if I had a room full of people and I wanted to know how many of them had ever cheated on a spouse. I would start by having everybody in the room take out a coin and flip it. If the coin came up heads, they would raise their hand to answer yes to my question. If the coin came up tails, they would answer truthfully.

If I then ask the question and 80 people out of 100 raise their hand, that means that 60% of the people in the room have cheated on their spouse.

Presumably, nobody here is ashamed about their belief or non-belief and the way you have structured the question wouldn't take advantage of the coin flip even if they were.

Wouldn't you get a more accurate sampling if you just ask who believe and who doesn't...What's with the whole flipping the coin thing.

By the way...I'm a non-believer.

So, statistically, 50% of the people who read this question will answer. But that doesn't tell you anything about why they answer the way they do. It just tells you that the number of answers is half of the number of readers, all proportional to the religious proclivities of the entire set.

I flipped a coin to see if I should answer this question.

And then I flipped a coin to see what answer I should give. Unfortunately the coin has rolled under the sideboard in the kitchen, so I probably shall never know the answer.

By the way, what is it we are supposed to believe in? Reaching decisions by flipping a coin?
