I grew up in LA and worked in the area during the summers when I was in high school. It's definitely not a place you want to be walking by yourself during the day even. Night time, the place turns into a madhouse. Drugs, violence and prostitutes run those streets. It's nuts. During the day it's definitely safer than compton, watts or south central due to the amount of business traffic in the area. Know also, downtown LA is filled really with street hustlers and bums, not Gangs. Still, avoid it. Hope that helped.

skid row is right in the heart of the downtown area and it isn't a really great place to be walking around. mainly, it is 'home' to homeless people, drug addicts, mentally ill people, criminals, and recent jailbirds that asked to be dropped off there. i would consider south central/watts/compton safer (though also not great by any means) - those areas are farther out from the main downtown area and have more areas that homeless, criminals, and mentally ill can be spread around in; skid row makes up a very small area of downtown while those other areas are suburbs and the problem people are more spread out. how safe an area is also depends on some extent to who you are and what your purpose in the area is - a white girl in compton might be bothered while a black male wouldn't. same with skid row.

LAPD won't go through parts of Skid Row at night. That should tell you everything you need to know....

There is a lot of mental illness and drug use. It is important to be aware of your surroundings.

The company I work for is located in Skid Row. I chose not to walk around. I watch too much Forensic Files. From what I hear it has gotten better there used to be alot of drug dealing going on. Just the other day the cops had the street I worked at blocked off because there was a murder. THis was bout 8am. NOt sure when the murder took place. I am not familar with south central, compton or watts. I live closer to Orange County.

There are lots of new construction "Lofts" selling in the middle of Skid Row. Yes you can walk around, BUT just be "aware" of what is going on. Most of these people are just homeless and not dangerous, But a few a drugs addicts and would knock you in the head for your money to buy drugs. Just be careful.

One thing about Skid row outsiders are safe, only the residents of Skid Row are victims. I work right on tSkid Row at the Union Rescue Mission on San Pedro Street between 5th and 6th Street. Never have I seen anyone but the homeless ended up as a victim. The homeless does not have guns or there is not any drive bys or gang problems. There is nothing wrong with Watts or Compton I lived in both places 20 years and better.

Yes, LAPD is wide spread throughout the downtown cities which actually is the most dangerously serious population to be mindful of. They shoot to kill, addicts and prostitutes don't.
