I heard of people going traveling and buying stuff from The North Face factory and then selling it when they got back home. Can this really be done. Does anyone have more info? I'm going to SE Asia in a few weeks.

Not directly from the factory, unless you really have a good contact higher up in the food chain. The best option is to go to wholesale markets where middlemen (and women) will sell to shops. Prices are rock-bottom, and usually you don't bargain there if you are only buying a few items, but you can get good deals if you buy in large lots. One of the best wholesale markets is in Shenyang.

However, be aware that although you can buy and are allowed to take out of China practically anything you want, your country may -and will- impose tariffs for importing goods (some goods are tariff-exempt), as well as sales tax if you reside in a country where they have goods and services tax.

You should NOT be able to buy directly from the factory. The factories work per scheduled production lot orders and the units produced go directly to the entity that placed the order. The factories in China DO NOT manufacture speculative ("if you make it, it will sell") amounts....unless they are planning to bypass the brand owners -- in which case I will be concerned about what you would be buying... There have been cases of factories selling "leftover goods" from the original orders, Business Week Asia had some articles about that back in 2005-06 time frame, I think it was about a case of Converse sneakers....At any rate, those cases highlight brand infringements.
You can go to the wholesale markets -- like the one near the Zoo in Beijing, but the stuff that you would buy there is by no means guaranteed to be real.

All branded items you see in markets in China are fake. Be realistic about it. A North Face Goretex jacket for US$50? How real can that be.

North Face does not have factories in China. They place orders to individual factories. Those factories will never ever sell any of their brand customers products to third parties.

2nd quality will get destroyed, over-production is a myth that does not exist.

What you see cheap is always fake.

You may be able to find those "illegal to sell" product as the $20 LV handbag in Chinatown. For the product you found in East Southern Asia, the product could possiblly be a real one and fake one, but judge it yourself. (Some fake product in there can be as real as the real one that even some expert could hardly tell a difference. Some are very fake and cheap quality.)

For ES Asia, it is ture that some of them are coming for the same factory as the real product. (Most factory are there, and don't expect everyone is a perfect person with those low wage.) There aren't any security check in most of the factory. Some of the clothes may steal "take out" by the workers there for selling. I remeber I worked in one of the clothes manufactue. All those brand named jeans are just laying around, and I can easily take 1 or 2 out without paying, and just report them as defeats and destroyed. (I Was working for summer job there, not to mention how many can a manager take out those clothes.) Well... this was 15 years ago.

You will need to search the internet for the brand name, type of item, and the word wholesale. This will get you started. Because you have not provided specific brands, it is difficult to give you a specific website to purchase from. There are also warehouses that sell items by the pallet, and auction sites that offer pallets of things, that you can bid on for a small investment.. Generally the more you buy, the better the deal.. Try to find a place that won't have to deliver the stock to you, this will save you $$... Sometimes the shipping costs exceed the cost you pay for the merchandise.. You will probably need a business license to buy form the warehouses or some wholesalers.. This is easy to get usually at your county clerks office..

Haha, does anyone buy things from factories anywhere?

The thing is, the North Faces and Helly Hansons you buy there don't even exist. My cousin has a jacket that people who work at those stores here in Washington can't recognize. Anyways, you buy them off street markets that open at night. You kinda gotta know where to find them, if you're in HK it's called "Woman's street" And it's really not worth the $10 you make, but it is nice to use them.

Not from the factory. Maybe from a wholesale joint.
