You have to cook (I'm assuming melt) it in a double boiler, or a heat tempered bowl on top of a pan of softly boiling water.

If you have a heavy saucepan with a "sandwich" bottom, and you keep the heat low, you shouldn't have any problem.
Otherwise, use a double boiler. Make sure no water gets into your chocolate, as it will make hard lumps.

Get yourself two pans (also known as a double boiler) you need a lager pan that the smaller pan will fit in...place water in the lager pan and put on your stove top i recommend keeping your burner on low put your chocolate in the smaller an and put your smaller pan in the larger pan...you need to stir constantly or you will burn your chocolate....so the key here is stir a lot!

Definitely use a double boiler. Boil water in the bottom and it will evenly heat the top pan so that your chocolate won't scorch. If you decide to use the microwave, do not use a plastic container. I did that once and the plastic bowl I was using melted.

a double broiler is the best thing for melting chocolate, it's a good investment, and they're not expensive at all, swing by a garage sale and you may find some luck

Yes, it can happen, even in a microwave. The only SURE way to melt chocolate without burning it is in a glass bowl over a pan of boiling water. It can be melted in a microwave if you don't do it for too long, but how long is too long? How long is a piece of string?

Melt it over steaming water - then it won't "burn". But don't continue to heat it once it melts and don't get water in it.

Use a double-boiler. It heats water under it and the boiling water is what actually melts the chocolate.
