So we have adopted a new ketten about 2 weeks ago. My 1 1/2 yr old cat took verynicely to her after a few hours and now she cleans the kitten and lets her snuggle with her as well as teaching her the ropes when it comes to playing tuff. My question is although I find this behavior sweet and cute, is this a typical cat behavior? Do spayed females usually assume a motherly role with new kittens or are my cats just being kitties with no genetic behaviors involved.

Please no responses telling me to be happy or anythin like that. I am happy I am glad they get along, I am looking for the science in this behavior.

Both of the animals in my house seem to have adopted my baby as their own. (we have a 1 1/2 year old female dog and an 8 month old male cat) They require constant supervision because they are always trying to snuggle her and kiss her. Whenever she cries they run to her and give me dirty looks like i should be doing something faster. I think it just depends on the animal just like with people. some have the maternal (or paternal in the cat's case) instinct and some don't. Maybe it's like people who can't have kids and adopt.

My 15 year old male cat adopted my kitty when I got her. She was 6 months old and he took care of her like he was her father. He had been a father when he was younger so he knew what to do! It was so cute!

Most animals have a caring spirit. You can see this behavior throughout nature. Dogs adopt kittens, squirrels. Cats adopt anything to mother. It is normal behavior. In India they use pigs to raise tiger cubs as they are trying to get the tiger population back up.

Recently a Lioness adopted a gazelle (her natural food) and helped raise it until it's Mom returned for it. She had it for days and kept the other lions from eating it..

yes this can be a natural thing. I've even seen it where a dog will take on a kitten as their own pup or vice versa.

There is no science in it. That's why you aren't getting any answers.
