in my opinion the Soviet Union. The gained hundreds of thousands of kilometres of land in Eastern Europe. Brought communism around the world due to their war efforts and were on the verge of discovering nuclear secrets by the end of 1945. They won

The United States and its allies won WWII.
Germany and Italy were partners, so to speak, in the War against Europe. Japan attacked us on our own soil on December 7th, 1941, which is what brought us into the war.
We fought the war on two fronts; in Europe and in the Pacific. When the war ended with Europe in June of 1945, with the complete and total surrender of the Nazis, we were still at war with Japan. Japan offered its total surrender in August or September of 1945, after we nuked them twice. The sad thing is, after Hiroshima, the Japanese refused to surrender, even though 450,000 of its people lost their lives. Then we bombed Nagasaki, and thats when Japan surrendered.
In the war in Europe, we had other countries fighting on our side - or we were fighting on theirs; namely, Britain, which is why we are such good and close allies today.
Stalin and the Russians were protecting their own lands and were allies as well.
Most of Europe was doing all they could just to keep their own countries out of Hitlers hands, but in the end, most of Europe was freed by the American allied forces. France in particular was liberated by the US, as well as Belgium, Sweden, The Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, etc.
It was a really tough time for everyone, but the allies prevailed.
