The standard military service load for a M-1863 Springfield Rifle-Musket was 69 grains of FFg powder with a 510 grain Minie Ball. Velocity was 963 fps.
That is a little faster than most standard velocity .38 SPL's and .44 SPL's, but way under the standard velocities for .357 Mag, .44 RemMag, 9 mmP, or .40 S&W loads.
When it comes to rifles, there simply is no logical comparison. Even with the relatively modest velocities of pistol caliber carbines, the velocities are nearly twice as fast as velocities produced by the M-1863 Springfield. And some newer varmint cartridges churn out 4,000 fps or there abouts.

just look it up, Allmost everyone here is wrong !
According to data for various muzzeloading weapons. Black powder muzzeloading rifles were quite capable of shooting in the 1500 fps area. I would imagine the sharpshooters loading to around 1800fps. Thats about max for black powder. That being said with a very very few exceptions no modern standard handgun loads reach 1500 fps. Just go to remington or winchesters websights click on ammo balistics and look at the velocity.
Oh and Civil war era weapons were very acurate and quite capable of hitting targets out to 500-800 yards.

Civil war rifled muskets had muzzle velocities in
the 1500 FPS. range.
Faster than most modern pistols by a bit.
They threw a very heavy bullet, but much
slower than the average rifle.
Muzzle energies were comparable to the average
big game rifle.

Max. velocity of a projectile out of one of those things probably is no more than 800 fps tops. I would predict is somewhere closer in the vicinity of 650 fps.

Projectiles from black powder firearms have a slower velocity than most modern smokless powder weapons, particularly magnum calibers.

No, black powder can't match the pressures of modern gun powder.

Regardless of how you mean "faster", black powder arms are slower in every way. BUT they are a LOT of fun to shoot!

Your friend has been smoking too much crack. Modern firearms will produce velocitys unheard of in muzzleloaders.

Not by a long shot. Those muskets relied on big chunks of lead hurled at low velocity. Modern rifle rounds are much much faster, using modern smokeless powder and a smaller, more aerodynamic projectile. As are most modern handgun rounds.
