If you spend $ 10 feeding a cat, then that is $ 10 that is not spent on a mosquito net, and a child in China dies of Malaria.

Someone might say, I am not good with people, I do not want to volunteer working with people. Well, get a part time job where you do not have to work with people, and donate the money to charity. Work is work right__???

I know, I know, this is not an easy question. Heck, I have a dog, so I am a complete hypocrite.

BUT

It does make you stop and think

Look forward to the answers.

The first poster is right, most people in the dog section could not answer an in-depth question like that. Than again, some people here think that their dogs are worth more than a human life and why bother with a child dying of anything in China or Africa or whatever!!! Sad, it really is..great question though!! Happy new year!!

ADD: Do you see what I mean? Any answer that even remotely supports human gets thumbs down. Some people even posted that they hate humans and could not care less about a child... I am still amazed that we have made it this far as a race!!

Totally agree with you. Unfortunately, they can't handle the liability of adopting out a dog like that, then having the people sue when the dog bites their kid that stuck it's face in the dog bowl. There ARE rescues out there who work with such dogs, but they're much more rare than those who are quick to put them down. It's sad. Food aggression can almost always be worked with....granted it's easier and less dangerous with small breeds... but still. I went to Louisiana after the hurricanes with my local no-kill shelter to bring back some cats. There was a dog there that absolutely broke my heart (actually there were a lot that did... but this one stood out). It was a Great Dane that came in at a whopping 30 pounds!! The thing was as emaciated as any animal I've seen on the shows you mention. FRIENDLIEST dog there too... but had a huge "FOOD AGGRESSIVE!" sign on it's kennel door. Fortunately the dog DID manage to get in with a breed rescue group, so it was probably eventually adopted.

What makes you think you cannot do both? I do. But I expect people to put some effort into helping themselves. Domestic animals are what they are because people made them dependent on our care.
Veiled in your question is your contempt for your fellow man, your false feeling of superiority and your disrespect for animals and people who love them.
I have been a foster parent a domestic crisis center volunteer and and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. I doubt that you have done as much to help others, because critics and whiners are rarely good at doing much else. I also work with abandoned and neglected animals. I honestly take greater joy in animals than people for one key reason: "If you find a dog starving and freezing on the street and you take him home and fed him and care for him for the rest of his life, he will never bite you. That is the principle difference between men and dogs."
My personal experience has proved that statement true.
Now get out from in front of the monitor and go save the world. Someone as self righteous as yourself cannot possibly have time to sit around baiting pet lovers online.

I think we each choose where we can best make an impact in the world. For me.. its with dogs.

I don't agree that donating $10 is actually going to get someone mosquito netting.. I think its far more likely to end up being waylaid by bureaucrats, thieves or smugglers.

(and not that you said it here, I also don't agree that pups produced by responsible breeders take away homes from shelter dogs)

I prefer to do my donating, rescuing and volunteering closer to home.

You are probably correct but before I would deal with helping non Americans in another country, I would take care of our own... The poor, the sick, the needy, homeless, vets who served in Vietnam who have no resources and beg on the street.. America needs a good shake. And most of the Hollywood personalities who give and keep giving to foreign countries need to help out fellow Americans FIRST! There should be a mandatory law that says you must neuter your pets or you pay a hefty price each year.. Watching these animals get put down because they are not wanted or not adopted makes me ill... Unless it is an aggressive Pit and I feel they all should be put down.. Just my opinion...

lol . People don't have malaria in China. the climates totally out of their natural needs...

anyways... I hate humans we've overpopulated the world and still are.

In china for example, they have well over 1billion people living there. Families are only allowed to have one child. I think we should all do that.

With dogs and other animals however, WE the HUMANS have created their problems and should sort them out. we're supposed to be their carers.

I work at an animals rescue centre ARC, and feel I need to help because people in my area are so ignorant.

I say bomb the dying and warring countries, and get it over with.

I understand your point, but in the larger scheme of things, if everyone contributes according to the drives of their passions, most needs of all kinds would be met. (The trick is getting them past the point of complacency into actually moving.) I tend to work with people doing things other folks might find too distasteful to do. That's fine, but some of those same people who wouldn't do what I would do, will spend time and money attempting to rescue animals, something I respect but would not personally do. No one does it all, but everyone should do something.

you are right.

its easier to care for the animals especially if they are in your neighborhood/home/city because its within "affection distance" if that makes any sense to you at all.

=====just a side note======

ANIMALS WERE ALL WILD AT ONE TIME. HUMANS CREATED MORE RESPONSIBLITLES BY DOMESTICATING THEM. IF WE HAD NEVER NEEDED A PET AMERICA ITSELF WOULD BE MORE RICH BUT INSTEAD, THEY ARE CREATING ORGINIZATIONS TO CLEAN UP THE MESS HUMANS MADE BY TAKING ANIMALS IN. WE HAVE A RESPONSIBLITIY TO CLEAN UP AFTER OUR MESS. if we had never adopted animals into our homes in the first place, this wouldnt be an issue. we would be eating cats and dogs for lunch and dinner. (not that i would : ( )

=====just a side note=====

people in china are worlds away.. so you dont have as much affection for them. am i right?
especially if youve never really experienced that hardship..

IF IT DOESNT TOUCH YOU PERSONALLY, PEOPLE WONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. because they are selfish.
(im sorry to be harsh but its a sad reality)

there are both worlds.. all people have their opinions.
mine? humans are above animals.
many people believe they should help animals too.. and i think thats great because they are helpless most of the time.
but in the end would you feed a dog or feed a child?
keep human race going?

its all fate though.
there is a reason a child dies because another is born every 6 seconds. if we had a cure, and money, and food, for every child in the world, we would be way over populated.
its the worlds way of balencing its self out..
sad but children have to die too.
(still my opinion so please try not to give me too many thumbs down)..

P.S.
(sorry for makin this thing so long..) and..
if you read everyone elses answers.. youll see that they do what makes them feel good like helping their LOCAL community or immidiate family.. or AMERICA first.
because it doest effect you the same.
america is LAND OF OPPERTUNITY. you come to america because you dont have the same oppertunities in china or africa. so you give a bum $10 to feed him yes he was fed for a day, but hell just keep asking for more..where as he should be going to the dollar store to buy himself better clothes to become presentable so someone will GIVE HIM A JOB.

you give a child in africa $10 they worship you. you feed them, their family, and give them just enough hope to go out and work in the fields or sweatshops at 7years old. because thats all they have.

If you drive a big V8 SUV or sedan, you are causing more:

1.Global warming
2. Money to support middle eastern terrorists

Life is ALL about choices - everything we do has an effect on something else. And people have different passions, interests & personalities. We all benefit from, and/or suffer from, everyone else's choices.

You can't equate the two. I help both people and animals.

Oprah has several mansions and a 60 million aircraft parked at the airport where I work. Everyone talks about what a great humanitarian she is. Maybe she should give up those things? Angelina Jolie adopted a few kids and had one of her own. Did she kill a child by giving birth to one of her own? Bill Gates has given away huge sums of money (and I credit him for it) but still lives a wealthy lifestyle. Don't ask me to not help animals until some of the wealthy famous people decide to live in poverty and give up all trappings of wealth.

It's not about pets and not helping animals. It's about doing the right things (not overbreeding animals for example), being part of the solution and taking personal responsibility.

Controlling birth rate in many countries and getting rid of totalitarian governments (such as that in Sudan) would solve many of the problems. Me not helping animals won't change those problems.
