Weapons of mass destruction are being paraded. How can such a gruesome and horrific spectacle be expected to evoke any sense of joy or happiness in the mindsof the citizens ? Or remind the people of their republican form of government ?
Though my question mentions only New Delhi it is actually intended and addressed to all the countries of the world ...

This is not the practice in every country of the world. We started this fan-fare just to follow the erstwhile Soviet style of display of Military might and create an atmosphere of guaranteeing security to the nation through our arms and destructive weapons......At the same time, our leaders kept in mind some sort of entertainment in the form of other cultural splendour with lot of dances, all "state Pride-Stalls of diverse types", reminding our citizens that we are a great hotch potch lot(based on facts or not). The leaders who run the national affairs have to follow this ritual every year on the Republic Day lest we forget that we are a Republic(at least , paper-wise.........although, it is hard to find the Spirit of a Democratic Republic, in reality).
This is a huge wastage of national resource for this annual "mockery".No country is ever willing to get afraid of Indian Military might and WMD.Even small countries like, Srilanka, Bhutan,Bangladesh or Nepal are hardly scared of Indian Defence/Destructive capability. Our borders are frequently violated by Bangladesh and Bhutan .......their para military forces regularly help infiltrators in entering into India .....attack and kill our BSF personnels......forcibly harvest crops from the Indian side of the borders......take away cattles and even women in some areas.Bhutan threw away a large number of Nepalese from its country in an "ethnic cleansing" effort ........ uprooting them from their land of birth into West Bengal(Norther part), which is , supposed to be a part of Republic of India without any protest from the State or the Central Govt.Indians residing in Nepal for generations have been cleared off the bordering regions of Nepal and those who are still living there , have no choice anywhere else....they are living without basic right as equal citizens there.A Srilankan soldier had the audacity of assaulting our former PM(Rajiv Gandhi) physically......the same soldier became a national hero there overnight.Every srilankan hates Indians......forget about getting scared of our military might.Instead, we obliged them to eliminate people of Indian origin. In recent times the Genocide of the Tamils in Srilanka (who are mainly of Indian origin) is going on without a protest from our side ( they hardly care our Defence forces)........they care a fig for Indian might and Indian will to do anything to defend these people........after all, the BIG BROTHER hasw branded the LTTE as a Terrorist outfit and we have to oblige the BIG Br.
I am not mentioning the name of Pakistan, which is irrelevant.Pakistan hardly ever was nor is concerned with Indian Military capability.
A "single day event" on the 26th of January every year costs this nation a few thousand of crores of rupees. The preparation of this event takes place for months involving all the States and thousands of people of each state. All the High Officials and Ministers of each state(who are essentially thoroughly a corrupt lot) and the members of their families do attend this FUN.All Cultural groups of all the states spend months of preparation for participation in this involving a huge number of trainers and trainees with special "Dress Codes" spending a huge sum of money which is completely a "non produtive expenditure".......what a shame it is when you witness quite a large number of hungry people "begging for money or food in the Railway Stations of New and Old Delhi.....or along the road side or scavanging in the garbage bins not far from the main venue".This is what they are to live with ....poverty is their fate and they are increasing in number in every city/town/village of Mahan Bharat.
Why is it that no Political Party ever raise this point on the floor of the Parliament of India to stop this unethical expenditure ?Why is it that most TV Channels remain busy in Highlighting and Glorifying this event?
Why is it that "Beat of Retreat of the Army..........back to barracks" has to be celebrated spending more wasteful expenditure to carry on with the lagacy of the Raj and the Ritual Salute ?
This is a Sheer Stupid and Illogical Expenditure in the name of celebration of Republic Day of this country.
Does the word Republic has meaning to the poor accounting to over 40% of the population of this country? What does it mean to world's "largest number of milnd, the largest number of illiterates , largest number of lepers, largest number of malaria victims and HIV -AIDS"? Are we proud of this even after becoming an official Republic for last 58 years? Is it a matter of pride for those who can't have even one meal a day (numbering more than 15% of our population)?

The demonstration of the country's military might is symbolic in the sense that it depicts defence preparedness of our armed forces against foreign aggression. You will agree that although India has never acted like an aggressor on any country but India has been attacked four times by Pakistan and once by China. There is no harm if our General Public can get some kind of confidence through such displays that we are prepared to defend our country ably. Our defence forces are probably the best in the world, so what if they are showcased once a year in front of the General Public?

You are welcome to leave India and make your home in a country that has no Defence forces. I'd like to see you live there without any weapons at home and comment like this!

The very fact that people like you are able to open their piehole and spill crap about the defence forces is because of the very blanket of protection provided to them by these forces. Just one day without these soldiers endangering their lives on the border would mean you don't have any time to speak such crap and would be busy fighting for your very life against enemies of India. So, be thankful you moron!

Prove that any of the weaponry is actually live ordnance on the parade, apart from ammunition carried by security details all the rockets are mock-ups painted nice for parade day.

Tanks are without live ammo and I doubt id any of the other items are combat ready to use.

That is called 'Shakti paradarshan'

By that we show the whole world that we are a strong nation & we have the capability of fighting with anyone.
I feel proud when i see those weapons.
I feel safe.

I feel good that my country is strong enough to fight with terrosism & other enemies,
that is the motive of doing such things,

You should also know that India has been a peace loving country.
We never tyhrow bombs at others.
We just show to the world that 'WE CAN'
It doesn't mean 'WE WILL'

Thank you.
Proud to be Indian

Because, we are so scared that
we want to feel secured by the
display only.

we know that we donot have the guts
to use them against the enemies.

The leaders want to feel happy
that we have so many, but not usable
at all on ony one, be it terrorists,
be it Bangladesh, be it Pakistan
ot the Maoists.

IT IS THE SOLDIER
It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A simple poem that you can find online to read for yourself, I did not make it up.

I can understand that seeing such 'horrible' things such as guns and missiles may make you uneasy, but just think of this - without the soldier standing on the line everynight to ensure that you can sleep in your own bed everynight, New Dehli or any other country would be torn assunder in quick order.

We don't like to see the brutal side of life, but we must remember that it is there and needed.
