find out what their favorite thing to do is and do it, also you need to ask like their friend, or make it seem they are incharge... tell them " Your mommy is comming back" but don't say when because they are smart about time. If you want them to go to sleep, find a very long disney movie like beauty and the beast, always works for my regulars... if they have a certain drink they love give it to them, like one kid I had loves milk and he was crying because he mommy left so I asked him if he wanted any milk and he stoped and I gave him some, every time he started crying I would give him some milk. Might be different with your kid.

Talk to her, play a game, show her something interesting. Children will cry for their parents but if they're being distracted and having fun, they won't notice.

I would just tell her her Mom will be home soon and ask her where her favorite toy or game is to distract her. Show her that babysitters can be a lot of fun!

When I was a teenager, I baby sat a little boy who cried at the window for his Mom. I told him I knew exactly how he felt that I when I was little like him I missed my Mom when she was away and that I knew his Mommy was missing him too but she would be home soon. It did the trick, the fact that I understood what he was feeling seemed to change his mood.

Good luck!

tell her that mommy will be back, but untill then take her outside, have her pick out a movie to watch. start a routine when ever she's with you and distract her from mommy by the time she knows her mommy left she could be back by then. you don't want to call her mommy because it could make it worse and make her miss her more.

Comfort her, then distract her with something friendly and fun - like a teddy bear, or a brightly colored, fun game, a cartoon - anything friendly and fun to a 3 year old. Once she is distracted, and feels like where she is is fun and safe, she will calm down.

Make sure that you remain calm and don't get frazzled. When little ones see that you are not happy, then they get an uncomfortable feeling and want mommy even more. Even if she is shrieking and screaming keep a nice look on your face and a low, calm voice.

Good luck!

Distract her with anything - puppet made out of a sock for example

comfort her for a few minutes and then tell her that her mommy will be back later and meantime she has to stop crying, like a big girl. good luck . . . she should get tired of this and with some luck fall asleep. put on soothing or fun kiddie music or a good kids' TV program to distract her, but don't try too hard. you'll just end up having a battle of the wills. the kid is 3, after all, a notoriously horrible age.

good luck and don't lose your cool

Try not to make a big deal out of it. Offer her a couple of options to play with or a craft to make. Sooner or later she'll get bored crying and whining and move on to the fun things you've put out for her or fall asleep crying.
