When I first take off the transmission seems to slip and then SLAM into gear. I checked the Trans. fluid level and it's fine. It does this 2-3 times when first taking off then the problem goes away. It's worse when the car is cold.

that's usually a dirty filter and fluid that causes that too happen, you can try changing the fluid and filter or take it to a transmission shop an let them test drive it,they can tell you more about it,you could also have a front pump going bad or a shift solenoid going bad in it,either way a transmission shop will be able to tell you more about it once they drive it,and the test drive will be free, good luck on it and have a good new years.

Also remember that when they change the fluid and filter that they only change about 2 quarts of fluid. The transmission holds about 11 quarts! so you really ain't getting all the fluid changed! Tell them you want ALL the fluid changed. In order to do this they will have to disconnect one line of the transmission and run the motor to pump the fluid out while putting new fluid in. AND be sure to use Mopar ATF 3 or the latest.

I had the same issue with my 99 Intrepid - I found that having the fluid and filter changed help quite a bit, though it didn't go away completely, the mechanic at the dealer said it also had to do with the high amount of miles my car had (over 190,000) so if you have fewer on yours the slipping should go completely away after a fluid and filter change - though also have them check out the valves - mine were fine, but the mechanic had thought it might be that at first

My '01 Dakota does something like that too. It's the valve body (the part that controls where the fluid goes). The valve body is controlled by a computer. There are electric solenoid valves (that are probably getting sticky) that open and close ports in the valve body and Chrysler seems to have a little trouble in this department. I'm going to try a fluid and filter change. I'm switching to synthetic ATF. New Chryslers use a special synthetic transmission fluid now and I think this may be why.

Have the transmission fluid changed, and the filter. Make sure they change the filter.
A lot of places just suck the old fluid out and replace without ever dropping the tranny pan, and they can't check or replace the filter without dropping the pan.
When the fluid gets old and dirty, it has trouble passing through a dirty filter, therefor the pump cannot send the proper pressure to the transmission bands or plates.
