It seems to me that in this day and age, you pretty much have to at least claim you believe in God and that your "faith" is what guides you, yadda yadda. Why can't someone who looks at the world rationally have a shot at the one job in the world that needs to most rationality? Or can he/she?

snoopy, it is a serious question, although in reading it I can see where you thought I was bashing someone. I'm not. I do hope you decide to answer. Thanks!

Just lie about religion until you get elected like every other politician lies.

The USA and the USSR came perilously close to destroying each other and the rest of the human race as well. We did this because the American public couldn't stand the thought that an officially atheist government might actually succeed at providing for its citizens at least as well as we were able to. America will continue to elect religious hypocrites until superstitious Christians finally have their oppurtunity to attempt to destroy human civilization. America will elect rational leaders only if fundamentalist Christians and Muslims achieve the Armageddon they so ardently seek and if they somehow don't manage to kill us all.

Only after ignorant religious superstition is revealed as the force for evil it has always been and warm human blood is dripping from the hands of self-righteous Christians, will rational thinking citizens finally gain the upper hand and allow America to achieve its proper political and scientific destiny. As long as the majority of Americans describe themselves as religious, America will continue to remain a serious threat to the long term survival of the human species.

Edit: Sorry, snoopy, but faith IS irrational -- that's the whole point of it. If faith were rational, it would be called knowledge.

Of course. We don't elect our officials based on their religious beliefs. Rather, we elect them based on how well they lie to us.

Earlier this year, a poll revealed that most Americans would vote for a black, jewish or homosexual president before they’d vote for an atheist.

So does that answer your question ?

Not in this day and age. Candidates want votes and that's unfortunately what it comes down to.

Why couldn't you be an Atheist and "pretend" to be christian to draw their votes? I mean, since when do politicians tell the truth anyways?

I'd rather elect an atheist than some christian freako that randomly spouts his propaganda to the masses.

Maybe you should run.

Yeah it doesnt state in the rules that they have to be religious! The just need good views. Plus if they are really cool and they put out a music video with Britney Spears they will get elected for sure!

There have been atheist presidents in the past. Politicians will claim to believe in anything that will get them elected. Just because they call them selves Christian doesn't mean they truly have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

No, the evangelical Christian movement controls alot of the voting block and as well I doubt AIPAC would support an atheist as they maybe critical of the Israeli apartheid.

Supposedly, atheists are the most hated minority group in the States. I'm guessing no. At least nobody who's openly atheist.
