I recently found out that tomato puree is genetically modified in that the tomatoes ripening gene is reversed to enable them to keep it without going off. Do you find this an issue? does GM food worry you?

I see no problem with GM food, for example golden rice. Every year 800,000 children die in Africa because they don't have enough vitamin A and we have the solution to this. Golden rice, however due to the wests very self centred nature we don't allow them to grow this for GM fears!! However soya beans are now almost all genetically modified for our uses so how come its fine for us and not for them!

On February 5, 1996 selected branches of Safeway and Sainsbury's supermarkets throughout the United Kingdom started to sell tomato puree made from genetically-modified tomatoes.
By July 1999, however, the product had been withdrawn.
As the tomato was produced using genetic modification, it is a legal requirement for the product to be subjected to extensive review by the appropriate regulatory authorities before being given approval for sale in the UK. The tomato was grown in California because the British climate is unsuitable. However, the whole tomato could not be marketed in Europe because, as a viable GMO (genetically modified organism), marketing consent would be needed under European Directive 90/220/EEC

A lot of food is modified to some extent. A lot of the seeds they use to grow thing are change so the get maxim root growth and so on. Than they feed the left over product to cows and in return you eat some of it in your veg and meat. This is why girls who are 13 look 18 and cancer rates are crazy high. Do not buy Chinese food products I wont start on that though..

GM food is quite disturbing.

Doesn't worry me a bit. If I watched all of the things that were being modified and didn't eat them, I just might starve to death. This is all because we, especially in North America, want what we want all the time and want it to look perfect.
I never had any problems, growing my own and eating seasonal. But, the demand is there and the scientists have delivered as we wanted.

There are some genetically modified tomatoes on the market; however, this doesn't apply to all tomato products.

Where in the world are you?

After a massive consumer backlash GM food is virtually non existant in the UK.

Any GM ingredients must also be labelled as such, so no one would be in the dark as to whether the puree contained GM tomatos.

No, I do not want to eat GM food.
