Since they took out the semi-conductors and PS2 related hardware for playing PS2 games theres absolutely not backwards compatibility. Whats worse is that in Europe there are no 60Gb PS3s available so we're forced to keeps our PS2s plugged in even if we could afford the extra $100 for a bigger harddrive. I heard that there are plans to make the 80Gb PS3 backwards compatibile using software emulation. Could the same not be provided in a downloadable update for 40Gb PS3s? Since the as far as I know the 80GB and 40GB are identical except hard drive size, 2 extra USB ports and a memory card reader?

A big NOPE, sorry. Sony is losing money with their PS3 venture and they wanna recoup that loss with the no-backward compatibility scheme so that people would buy the higher GB model and shelve the PS2 for good.

The 40gb ps3 IS backwards nicely suited with PS1 video games because of the fact it somewhat is totally emulated by potential of utility, PS2 video games besides the incontrovertible fact that can not be emulated totally by potential of utility effectively sufficient. The 60gb ps3 had some required ps2 areas to emulate the ps2 video games, they have been taken out to make the 40gb ps3 extra low priced.

The 80GB version still has the PS2's GPU in it. The 40GB does not. There's no reason Sony couldn't make an emulator for the GPU, but they aren't going to, because, as they say, the PS2 is the past; the PS3 is the present and future.

The 80GB PS3's are already backwards compatible and they use Software Emultation for backwards compatibility.

The 80GB PS3 can play both PS1 and PS2 games, the 40GB PS3 was the only PS3 ever made that cannot play PS2 games and most likely it will never have backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

The only major way that Sony could make the 40GB PS3 a whole lot cheaper would be to take out the backwards compatibility.

But to answer the last part of your question, yes the 80GB and 40GB PS3 are identical except for the extra USB ports, hard drive size, memory card readers, and the 80GB PS3 has backwards compatibility, the 40GB PS3 doesn't.

I have the 60GB PS3 and as you probably already know, both the 20GB and 60GB have the best backwards compatibility and can play almost ALL PS1 and PS2 games.
