Hi all,

I have a friend working in GuangZhou, China and I want to send him his laptop and cell phone. I was wondering if anyone can answer some questions that I’m unclear about regarding international shipments. Thanks!

1. Are laptops and cell phones a prohibited item to ship to China?
2. If they are not prohibited items, do I have to pay customs/taxes to China?
3. What’s the most economically and safe method to send these packages?
4. Does anyone know if there’s a website which list prohibited items from shipment into China? Or list of items which require tax payment to China customs? I can’t seem to find such a site.

Thanks in advance!

You can send those items to China, as long as they are for personal use and not for re-sale. If the items belong to your friend and have been used already, you won't need to pay import taxes or duties. If the items are new, you may or may not have to pay import duties. Tariffs and procedures vary depending on the type of good. Check the website below, from the US Government.

The best and safest method to ship is by courier (DHL, Purolator, etc.) but your country's postal services may be cheaper and as reliable. In any case, make sure you get insurance, tracking, and delivery confirmation,

No above answers are all wrong. You cannot ship any package to china that exceed $117 unless its a single item that is already above that value, in which case customs will review it on a case by case basis. China is a self clearance country which means the recipient has to accept the shipment before customs will release it for delivery.
That is what they say. In my own experience it take at least 2 weeks to clear customs.

Tax is not your business. A notice of tax imposition will be sent to the receiver (your friends side).
I am not sure the rate. Probably somewhere in from 10 to 30%.
If the product is new and the value exceed US$100, lots country charge a duty on it (the US is the same).
Carrying it back is another story.
Wish your friend not to be charged.

I have sent cell phones back to my relatives back in China. It's fine. And for the labtop, i have brought one back to China few years ago. They are both fine. I don't think you have to pay any tax.. well i didn't.

If both of them support bluetooth, you can surely send the photos. If your PC doesn't support bluetooth, there are instruments available, which make the PC bluetooth-compatible.
