Scripture well known as the "spiritual warfare" set.

Shield of faith protects us from doubt and allows the assurance of God during trying times.

Satan has come to steal and destroy and hates Christians. (Just like secular hmanist hates Christians) Those fiery darts are the things which penetrate our armor and will to live a holy life and be pure.

Helmet of salvation is a "way of thinking" as in yielding to the way Christ thinks. Christ sees things much differently than this world. we align our thought process to Christ.

Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, self explanatory. We see life and wisdom in the Word of God by utilizing our God quickened Spirit, by yielding to the Holy Spirit as gold is mined from the Word of God.

In order to answer this question, one must read within the context by which the Word is rendered. Before we read Ephesians chapter six verse sixteen, one is advised to begin at the beginning. For our topic of discussion, we will begin at Ephesians 6:10. "A final word: Be strong with the Lord's mighty power. Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies and tricks of the Devil. For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. Use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the sturdy belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News, so that you will be fully prepared. Eph 6:16 "In every battle you will need faith as your shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed at you by Satan. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of GOD. Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all Christians everywhere." We should pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ without ceasing.

"Above all, taking the shield of faith" = use your faith first, relying on your spirit within, the Holy Spirit, God

"wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." = The Spirit, God always holds fast to the idea that "kind words turn away wrath". This is perfectly in line with the larger principle of "overcoming evil with good".

"And take the helmet of salvation" = Remember you are sons and daughters of God in Jesus. Be of one mind with Jesus' teachings and use them, apply them. Think the way he thinks.

"and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God" = Words and actions that are of God, Godly, acceptable in His sight.

Notes:
"fiery darts = evil challengings"
"wrath = evil, wicked"
"quench = not just neutralize it, but water it with something beautiful and good the way Jesus would"
"helmet = your head is covered is symbolic that your mind is far more protected when you think the way Jesus thinks"

~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a passage referring to the proper way to dispel anger and hate and replace it with the higher and more noble principles of God when faced with the evil machinations and manipulations of people who would seek to challenge you or your beliefs.
This says that faith must be our shield against all temptations. It says that we are to be fully persuaded of the truth of all God's promises, and that faith is our shield in every direction. It also says that salvation must be our helmet, that is, our hope. Though Satan would tempt us to despair, hope keeps us trusting in God, and rejoicing in Him. The sword is a necessary and useful part of the soldier's gear, and the Word of God is our sword in every battle.
This means that we are protected from attacks by the wicked through our faith in God. It is our suit of armor with salvation as the helmet, and the word of God as our sword. With these things, we will be able to fight against wickedness as we live.
To understand Eph 6:16, you need to start at Eph 6:13: Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
It's spiritual amour that you consciously wear. The spirit sword is the word of mouth. The Faith shield protects you from false claims. Your walk should be in peace. etc...
