Hmmm.... I thought for sure I had a good reason, but now I can't find it!

Seriously, the best reason is by considering what would happen if EVERYONE did it. companies wouldn't put out new software, they couldn't afford it, so we would all suffer.

I'll pirate on occasion, if I just want to try something, or use it once. but if I find a game or software that I really use and appreciate, i'll buy it. I'm a programmer myself, so I know what kind of hard work can go into these programs.

There are several reasons why. First and foremost is the fact that it is a crime, and while some say it is a victimless crime, that is far from the truth.

Many contend that piracy is stealing, and it is stealing in the same sense that using your roommate's car without permission is stealing, because that is what piracy is: using software or music without the permission to do so.

Wait, you need permission to listen to music? Yes you do. That permission is implied when you tune into a radio station, buy a CD, or buy the music through an authorized online retailer. I could go further quoting copyright law, but I'll save you the legal jargon.

In short, consider putting yourself in the programmer or artist's shoes. You pour time and yourself into a creation that takes months or even years to develop and create. You put it out on the Internet for sale at a modest price, but after only a few sales, you find it distributed for free through a file sharing network, and you never again make a penny from your hard work.

That is why you should be against piracy.

Here's one reason: My brother and his partner have spent years working on a program to be used by the food service industry, is just now coming to fruition. They still have not turned a real profit, but hopefully they will. In the meantime, he has worked two jobs to support his family. No one should have the fruits of their labor stolen from them.

PIRACY CAUSES ILLITERACY.......

It falls under the basic moral philosophical principle that you should "act as though it should be common law." if everyone pirated programs, there would be no reason for programmers to make any code, and then there would be less innovation in that field, that could lead to less innovation elswhere, and even slow down the progress of mankind as a whole.

ok.. i'll come around your place.. empty your purse.. is that fair?

I make music, what you think pays my rent? what u think pays for studio equipment? you think ALL musicians are multi millionaires?

if you need to ask, you have no sense..if a software company shuts down, due to people not buying their product (it's happened before) the people who are the first to moan are the first to complain about it haven't bought it, ironically if they bought the product.. the place wouldn't have gone bust.

Piracy ruins the market for software providers.
In order to recover their investment & costs, & survive,
they have to charge exhorbitant prices for the first few copies.
Eventually, they will go out of business, of providing software.

piracy is bad because it takes money from the people who worked on writing the program for profit....

its like stealing anything else, if you owned the electric company, you wouldnt want me stealing electricity, would you?

Now i'm not saying that closed-source programming is good, because it doesnt further technology, so instead of pirating closed-source software ( like microsoft's)...

embrace open-source alternatives such as OpenOffice, Linux, DD-WRT, GIMP etc...

Programmers need to eat, too.

Also, if it were so easy or you didn't need it, either you would do it yourself, or you would do without.
