I recently got a 40 GB PS3 for X-mas, not knowing until after I got it that basically only the 60 GB PS3 can backwards play old PS2 games. I know I should've done some research before I went out and got the 40 GB PS3. Then again, I've heard that its really tough to find a 60 GB PS3 anywhere for that matter. I also heard from some gut at a gaming store that I go to that even the 80 GB PS3 doesn't necessarily play PS2 games very consistently.
Anyways, it sounds like I may have answered my own question, but if any of you have anything additional to add, please, by all means, feel free.
You know what one of the worst things is that today after work I'm going to sell the five remaining PS2 games that I have left.
Thank you everybody and have a happy new year and stay safe out there people.

The 40GB PS3 is the only PS3 that cannot play PS2 games. The (discontinued) 20GB and 60GB PS3's had the best backwards compatibility because they had the Emotion Engine chip inside of it and they can play almost ALL PS1 and PS2 games

The 80GB PS3 doesn't have the Emotion Engine chip, instead it uses Emulation Software to be backward compatible and can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games, and during some PS1 and PS2 games there may be slight problems playing the game such as distorted audio and slow graphics. These issues have been worked out with the PS3 updates, but not all PS1 and PS2 games are problem free with the 80GB PS3.

The 40GB PS3 just didn't come with the hardware/software to play PS2 games. The only major way that Sony could make the 40GB PS3 cheaper was to remove the backward compatibility with PS2 games.

But if you are going to sell the 5 PS2 games that you already have, then the 40GB PS3 is good for you because you wont be playing PS2 games on it.

I've had the 60GB PS3 for about a year, and yes it is hard to find a 60GB PS3. The majority of retailers only sell the 40GB and 80GB PS3's. I know that some 60GB PS3's can be found on Ebay and Amazon.

You just have to create in Internal PS2 memory card. It doesn't matter on what the HDD size is.
