I was reasonable when the officer asked me if I knew why they pulled me over. I was polite back to them and he told me to wait a sec while he checked my details. He went in the car and came back. Then handed me my licence telling me I would hear from the courts or who ever within a few days.

Aren't they suppose to give me a ticket there and then? or the points also?

I wasn't even driving recklessly. I used my indicators and pulled safely from lane to lane in order to get infront of the person in the fast lane who had slowed down for some reason.

This person was them (unmarked police).

Is it possible to appeal? If I knew that what I had done was seen as reckless driving then I would not have done it.

No. You do not get points till either you pay the fine which is an admission of guilt or plead guilty in traffic court or are found guilty by the court.

This sounds to me like a pretty common game played by badge-bearing bullies during quotas, when they still lack funding but the citizenry have started paying attention to their driving: pull over a random driver and if the driver confesses to anything, write him/her up for it, knowing that the vast majority of ticketed drivers will pay rather than fight the ticket for any of a number of reasons, thereby increasing the jurisdictional coffers. If the badge-bearing bully cannot get an easy confession out of the driver, he/she/it will say something to the effect of the incident now being out of the bully's hands, let them go on their way, and pull over some other random non-violating driver.

you get the points as soon as you get the ticket. not everyone has to go to court over a traffic ticket. I would have thought he'd give you the ticket then. you can fight it in court, but unless you have a witness, it's his word against yours.
