If my wife does not have time to make here own she doctors canned beans.
She adds the following to taste.
Brown Mustard
Brown Sugar
Black Molasses
Bacon or Smoked Ham
It also depends on what brand of beans you are using.
She prefers Grandma Brown Baked Beans, but depends on where you live.

My husband's mother used to make something I call baked baked beans. Fry up 12 oz. of burger, combine that with some brown sugar, ketchup, and Dijon, and 2 cans of baked beans. Bake at 350 until hot.
Trust me, it's awesome. It's also practically a meal in itself.

I know exactly what you mean. We had the same problem years ago. We now buy Bush's canned baked beans. I like the plain, but my husband likes the brown sugar and maple syrup. Be sure to read the label, they have several different types.
