Maybe talk to someone with a cat and ask them if one is right for you

1) Nobody 'owns' a cat.
2) When you bring a cat into your life you are going to fall in love- count on it.
3) Don't do it unless you have enough income for vet bills. Just in case.
4) I used to think cat lovers were born not made until I heard my tough guy husband baby-talking our little darlings.
5) I wish you luck and love with your kitty. HNY

EDIT Originally I was going to answer:: If you have to ask you probably shouldn't. People either get kinda mushy over cats or they are indifferent. Then I remembered how my husband loved those babies. Perhaps if you go to a shelter and hold a few, brush a few, talk to them and see if there is the "love connection." It has to be right for both of you. Love Tink

Cats are not as aloof as people think they are. I have two cats who greet me in the morning when I get up, and come find me when they hear me come in the door at night. They sit on my lap when I watch TV. They come when I whistle. It matters how you treat them. If you ignore them, they'll ignore you.

Cats are great if you want a pet that you can leave from 7AM to 10PM and not worry. Cats don't need you to walk them. And they can sit in your lap. Couple of things about cats that may bug you - nothing is out of bounds for them - they walk all over tabletops, counters etc.and will climb anything. You may be able to train them with a squirt bottle not to do that when you are home but when you're gone trust me they're all over the counter top. The claw thing is an issue - do you de-claw or run the risk of your furniture being damaged. And cats are nocturnal by nature - so they tend to sleep more during the day, nap a little at night and then roam around late night/early AM.

The main differences I see between dogs and cats (I've owned both) is dogs stay on the floor (or couch) cats do not. Cats can wait 12 hours for you to come home. Dogs can't. Cats typically don't smell. Dogs often do. Cats are "inside" animals only - in other words you can't really take a cat to the park with you. Dogs can be inside or outside animals.

Both are fun to have, but dogs are just a little more high maintenance.

If you are a busy person and don't have a lot of time to spend with your pet a cat is a good choice. They pretty much take care of themselves, you just have to make sure they have food and water. It is a must to clean out their litter box at least every other day or it will smell really bad. If you don't like the smell of cat business, then don't get a cat. Put the litter box somewhere that you won't be smelling it all the time and out of the way of traffic. A covered one is best.
They like to claw on your furiture and drapes, and carpeting. Some people get them declawed but that is mean.
They may jump on your kitchen counter or table and get into stuff. You have to keep little things that they can bat around put away or it will be gone. You can teach them to stay off stuff though.

Cats are independent, so they come to you on their own time.
They aren't like dogs, who need attention 24/7. So you should understand, that the cat will hang with you when you want, but will refuse if it has something better to do. [nap?] haha

well, i would recommend getting a cat/kitten, they are soft adorable, and EASY TO PICK UP!

If you get a cat understand that cats do things according to there own schedule and you will have to accommodate them. They will give you love when they wish to and will not be falling all over you like dogs. You will get scratched and probably bit at least once. I love my cats but they will not change behavior to make you happy. You have to accept the cat and love them or you will be miserable with a cat. They don't have to be walked and they usually are very neat in the house. They love playing with balls and chasing things you dangle in front of them They are very entertaining and love their people. I would never be without a cat. Kittens are wild, crazy, fur balls that can overwhelm you quickly. If you have never had a cat I would suggest going to a cat rescue and getting a cat 1-2 yrs. old. They will be much calmer then a kittens. The rescue can match you up with a cat that works for you and will their to give you pointer on taking care of the cat.

Do you like animals? if yes, possible cat person

Do you like friendly/cute animals? if yes, possible cat person

Would you have a dog, but you cant be bothered taking it for walks, cleaning it, cleaning up after it etc? if yes, possible cat person

Do you want a low maintenence pet? if yes, possible cat person

If you have young (ie, less than 3 years old) children, i would wait until they are a bit older otherwise they will just chase the cat around everywhere and stress it out.

Can you afford the initial innoculations? couple hundred pounds per cat to get them vaccinated. if so, go ahead

Does your house have alot of room, with alot of soft places you dont mind pets going, eg beds, chairs, rugs etc.? if yes, fine. cats would rather sleep on a soft surface than a hard one, just like you would, and will thank you for it.

Do you have in your living room or wherever they will mainly be in the first 2-6 months carpet you wont mind getting full of cat pee? kittens mark everywhere ruthlessly. you will end up with pee marks all over your carpet. so do you have an old carpet or a dark one which wont show up any pee stains? Until they get neutered (especially boys) they will let it flow everywhere.

Are you patient? they will want fuss and stroking and someone to sit on quite alot once they are settled in properly. Would you be able to just sit down for about ten minutes, even if you are in the middle of something, to play with, or stroke, or just sit with the cat? if you cant then there is quite a big chance they will become fairly anti social and less like the type of cat most people want, which is a loving, purring lap cat.

Are you squeemish towards dead animals? no matter where you live your cat will one way or another find a bird, or mouse, or rat and kill it and then leave in in the middle of the garden, or outside your front door or whatever, as a 'present' which you will have to clear up. Its only a matter of picking up the animal (with a glove if you want) and putting it in your wheelie bin. But this can be a huge mountain o overcome if you cant stand dead animals. quite often the animal will have half its guts hanging out or atleast quite a bit of blood on it.

Cat owners must understand that a cat is not like a dog and won't come running tail wagging when you come home everytime. Cats demand respect and won't tolerate cuddling if they don't want it. They must understand the nature of a cat (scratching, climbing) and be ready to sacrifice having the $3000 leather sofa without considering the declaw mutilation surgery. they must understand the pictures of cats sleeping quietly under the Christmas tree probably ain't gonna happen and opt for a less than perfect tree with the balls being rearranged all the time. Cats are fun but you have to decide what your priorities are before getting one. There's alot more but those are my critical points.
