I just replaced my Head gaskets and I am reassembling the engine. The shop that reconditioned
the heads said the rocker arms are not adjustable and I just need to install the heads. A buddy of mine insists that they need to be adjusted after the install to tighten any that may be tapping.
I am familiar with adjusting them while the engine is running, but my buddy insists there is a way to adjust
them while it is not running! He is strictly a Chevy guy and said he bought a Chevy shop manual that had all the specifications. Anyone familiar with this process?
The engine has hydraulic lifters(I think) and I am using the original push rods in the exact locations.

I'll give you a freeby, I usually just say buy a book and read:

1. bump the motor over until the EXHAUST valve begins to open.
2. with the INTAKE valve closed, torque the bolt in the rocker arm to 20 ft lb
3.bump the motor over until the INTAKE valve begins to open
4. repeat for exhaust valve.
5. DON'T take my word for it, go buy a Haynes manual.

You're bud is half right, there is an adjustment for the rockers.
Solid lifters for OEM Fords went away in the early 70s.
DO NOT re-tighten a "ticking" rocker, you either need pedestal shims, or you have a slightly bent pushrod that needs replacing.

351w Valve Adjustment

Get a Haynes Auto Book for your vehicle. Do not guess with this major job. Installing the heads requires special bolt torqing sequence for the head bolts as well as other parts. The valves require special torqing as well. Do not guess as you must go by the manf specifications as listed in the book for your vehicle. Most engines now only torqe down the valve lifters with no adjustments. The older GMC engines like the chevy 302, and 350 do require in most applications to adjust the valve lifters after the engine is first started, this most likely why your chevy friend is cautioning you. Good luck

Just tighten them down. there's no adjustment. It's not a Chevy.
