I am baking a cake and I have a jar of opened maraschino cherries, which have small black spots on them, they tasted okay...I've had them for over six months (which I read is the shelf-life when opened and refrigerated). Opinions?

I suspect the baking will kill the mould on them so it won't kill you

Marischino Cherries last a very long time. In fact, I use very few and the jar I have must be years old and well preserved in the syrup. I just checked to be sure there are no black spots on them...nope. If you've only had yours 6 months +/- and have black spots, I wouldn't think twice..toss them and get a fresh jar.
Of course, I am not the best one to ask about shelf life or expiry dates...when in doubt, I toss it out.

the small black spots are completely natural, of course, when the berry has started getting decomposed.

Once you get the black spots or mold in the jar, they are no longer usable. Hop over to the store and get a fresh jar, hun.

I always use my good ol saying for determining if a product is edible.

"When in doubt, Throw it out."

I'd throw them out, go to the store, and buy a new batch which is probably the safest thing.

You can always take a chance, but don't say I didn't warn you :)

The small black spots could be one of two things: "sugar" spots or mold. Don't take a chance--get a new jar!
