Talking about his second coming he said this. Notice the last part in particular--
"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom." Matthew 16:27-28
So according to Jesus, some of those standing there listening to him would still be alive at the second coming. Well, unless there are some two thousand year old people still here waiting on him, this prophecy obviously did NOT come to pass.
Isn't this the test of a false prophet in the Bible? "When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him." Deuteronomy 18:22

psuiup, one man having a vision is not the sense of the passage and you know it. He is talking about the actually second coming, and clearly means more than one person.

alan b, it's not screwed up at all. I never said what I think about the Bible, or whether I am an atheist. I'm just quoting what he is reputed to have said. I don't know that he said it, I don't know he didn't. It's a prophecy attributed to him in Matthew, Mark and Luke. I didn't write it. Why not answer my question, instead of shoot the messenger?

There is historical evidence that suggests that Jesus never existed and none that he did.
If he did, you're question is a good one. I have brought this up before and have never gotten a satisfactory answer that explains why Jesus didn't return as he said he would. (And judging by the answers you have gotten so far, I'd guess you won't have any better luck.)
It is amazing that with all the failed prophecies in the Bible, people still cling so steadfastly to it, especially in light of all the existing empirical evidence that the Bible cannot be accurate. The power of indoctrination and suggestion are powerful indeed.

The REST OF THE DEAD are Judged According to their Works -
During the Millennium, saints of the most High will judge the world (Dan.7:22, 1 Cor.6:2-3, Matt.19:27-28, Re.20:4 below).
The Apostles will judge the twelve tribes of Israel (Matt.19:27-28).
Jews and Gentiles (1 Cor.10:32) are raised AFTER the thousand years (Re.20:5 below) and are judged according to their works (Re.20:12-13, Dan.12:2, Jn.5:28-29, Matt.16:27).
Dan.7:22 Until the Ancient of days (Dan.7:13) came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High (1 Cor.6:2-3, Re.15:3); and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom (Dan.7:18).
1 Cor.6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world (Dan.7:22 above, 1 Cor.1:2)? and if the world shall be judged by YOU, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
1 Cor.6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
Matt.19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
Matt.19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Re.20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them (Dan.7:22, 1 Cor.6:2-3 above): and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Re.20:5 But THE REST OF THE DEAD LIVED NOT AGAIN UNTIL THE THOUSAND YEARS WERE FINISHED. This is the first resurrection.
Re.20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books (plural) were opened: and ANOTHER book (singular) was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were JUDGED out of those things which were written in the books, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS (Re.20:13 below).
Re.20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell (the grave - Jn.5:28 below) delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works (Re.20:12 above, Matt.16:27 below, Re.22:12).
Dan.12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth (Ps.146:4, Job 7:9-10) shall awake, some to everlasting life (Dan.7:10 below), and some to shame and everlasting contempt (Jn.5:28-29 below) .
Jn.5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves (Ps.146:4) shall hear his voice (Heb.12:25),
Jn.5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation (Dan.12:2 above).
Matt.16:27 For the Son of man (Dan.7:13) shall come in the glory of his Father (Re.21:22) with his angels; and then he shall reward every man ACCORDING TO HIS WORKS (Re.20:12-13 above).

This is just some quote someone made up that Jesus "said" - just like most of the other things attributed to him in the Bible.
Since it was all written hundreds of years after his death by people who didn't know him (if he even existed), do you really think what is in the Bible is an exact quote? Besides, this is only one of the things that got voted in - many other "quotes," especially contradictory ones, are floating around out there in Gnostic Land. :)

This quote comes at the end of a long dissertation in Matt 16.
First the Pharisees & Sadducees demand a sign,
then Peter recognizes Jesus as the Messiah.
Then Jesus predicts his Passion & Death to his followers.
v.27 is about the second coming.
v.28 is about the Resurrection.

I have asked that same question from that exact verse to many of my Christian friends. Usually the answer is that i am somehow "misunderstanding" what death means. They say that during the second coming, some of the souls of those standing with him will not be saved. Some also say that it cant be taken literally. So again, i am confused as to what we are and not suppose to take literally when reading the bible...

You must be an atheist so I find it odd that an atheist would use the Bible (something he supposedly doesn't believe) to try and prove a point. If your using it as "proof" your claiming it's fact. Just a little screwed up don't you think?

And thus arose the myth of the wandering Jew. Because Yeshua didn't come back and do anything remarkable while those who were there lived, the myth came about that one Jew who was there was "cursed" by Yeshua to stay alive until he did return.
