We adopted a lab/cocker mix in june and she was about 5 or 6 yo at the time. they said that they had never had her mess her kennel in the six months they had her (no one wanted her because she was older and overweight, about 25 #s over). the people at the shelter are pretty sure that she was abused at her old home. when we brought her home she was fine for about a week but ever since them, maybe once or twice a week, she poops in the house but we have never had her pee in the house. we are pretty sure that she knows she shouldn't but she can't help it because she acts depressed afterwards. this is getting really annoying and i am starting to wonder whether there could be anything medical?

we can't crate her. she sleeps downstairs by the door as a deterant to anyone that wants to break in. we live in the country and our closest neighbor is a mile away. we don't feel safe without her down there.

you may need to leave her out side longer or spend some time with her outside as she may not feel at home out there and like you she is safer inside,so this may be the cause of it. You may want to see if she always goes in the same spot in the house or if it is in differant areas as there may be a smell there that she is attracted to, so don,t give up on her as she only needs a little TLC to help her along, ok.
So be sure to show her that this is wrong by talking to her and not yelling at her when she makes this mistake again.

look for signs that she may need to poop, you may have not noticed
after she poops, put her face down to it and tell her no, you are the boss
then take her outside and give her a time out on a leash or lead
keep doing it, it should work, but you have to give it time
since its not daily, its probably not medical
do NOT crate her

she's distracted outside. take her for a walk, but not on your property. dogs don't like to go on their territory. she might be holding it in and goes when she can't take it anymore. my dog only goes when we go for a walk, not in our backyard. she'll hold it for two even three days if we dont go for a walk.

You might consider trying to crate train her. Dogs have a tendency to not want to "go" where they sleep, and especially if they are enclosed in a kennel. Get her used to a kennel, and when you let her out, immediately take her outside. Dont let her back in untill she has 'done the business', and is calm.
Also, when I say to crate train her, I dont mean that she has to sleep there enclosed all the time. Just get her used to the crate, and keep her there for periods during the day. She can still sleep down by the door. You might even have her sleep in the crate, just with the door removed.
As a sidenote, cockers are notorious for wetting themselves from excitement. Try the above, and see if it helps.
Best of luck to you.

You need to not let her out of your sight. If she is always with you she can't poop right? Tether her to you so she is with you where ever you go then you can get her out the door quickly if she starts to go. Use a crate and confine her when you cannot be there to watch her. She will learn in time. You also need to praise her by telling her "good girl" and play with her when she does her business outside.
