For the New Years celebrations?
Many people have asked already what they can do to keep their dog/pup calm durring either fire works or other New Years celebrations.
What would you advise them to do???
Hope everyone has a happy & healthy & safe New Year!

Well, I never let them out of my sight or off leash. I make sure to PAY ATTENTION to who is petting or giving them attention. (I'm paranoid and don't trust most people) If we are in a crowd, I will always carry them.
I really am a loner and the largest group of people I've had over in the last 7 years is 3 - my son, my daughter and my dad and they all love my dogs and I do trust them, however I still have this protective instinct - even with my family.
As far as fireworks, I never take them to any fireworks displays - one of my Poms is terrified of that and thunderstorms and I usually sedate her, the poor thing. When she is sedated, we never leave home.
Tonight is no different. It is just going to be me and the dogs bringing in the new year. I'll probably be on Y/A! (what a pathetic life, huh?) lol
As for others, I would advise to watch their dog closely, don't let it off leash, don't let others feed it unless you know the person well, if it is afraid of fireworks, find a safe place so the dog feels secure or don't bring the dog to the fireworks display. If they are having a party with a lot of people and drinking, I would ask someone they trust if they could sit with the dog while they went out for a while. (they can leave the dog home alone if they are not going to be gone for hours on end)
About 15 years ago, my brother went to a New Year's party in Wisconsin and everyone was having a good time, but whenever they got the chance, they fed his dog beer. His dog got horribly ill. They didn't confess until the following weekend about what they did to her. It cost him a hefty vet bill. And these were suppose to be his friends!!
Happy New Year!!! Sorry for the novel!

In additon to the fireworks to celebration New Year, we also have fireworks played by neighbors. That's really annoying. I usually keep my dogs in the house with all the windows closed. I turn on the air conditioner and TV to block out some noises. My dogs bark at the fireworks. I put them into their crates early with A/C on whole night.

I'm keeping her inside and away from anything she shouldn't eat that will be around for the New Year's festivities (like alcohol). I'm lucky that my dog isn't frightened by loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms, so I don't have to worry about that.
And celebrating her birthday! Josie is 1 year old today! :)

Things to Do for Dogs Fearful of Thunder/ Fireworks:
Medication- consult your vet.. or Rescue Remedy may help
Train- "Its a Party!" Lots of treats and training time starting as things get started.. really useful with multiple dogs.
HUG- not literally... but studies have shown a tight item of
clothing on humans OR dogs will cause them to relax
I had a dog who developed a fear of thunderstorms/fireworks at about age 7. Highly socialized dog... no "reason" that we could find for the onset. We tried all of the above and what worked to some extent was the Party time... and to a greater extent was the supertight t-shirt we put on her.
What doesn't work:
Fretting/stressing with the dog
Babying the dog (reinforcing the fear).

Luckily fire works don't bother any of my current dogs, so that is not an issue. If it was an issue, I'd probably stay home with them. I couldn't have any fun away from home knowing they were terrified and in possible danger of hurting themselves.
When we are gone, we will just crate them so they are totally safe and then come home early! I want to celebrate with them anyway! :)

We live in a pretty quiet neighborhood, but there is always an array of fireworks and gunshots ringing out at midnight.
My boys will be safe and sound in their crates - It's the Pups first New Years, but fireworks on the 4th didn't phase him, so I think he'll do just fine.
Happy New Year to you too Golden Gal!

keep them inside, in a room with out windows. it will muffel the noise of the fireworks(eg. bathroom, basement, walk-in closet, etc...)

I include mine in the festivities, they all think it is great fun. Strange, in over 50 years I have never had a dog that was afraid of fireworks. Do you think proper socialization could have anything to do with that?

We end our celebrations early and are always home by midnight. And our dogs are inside.
It's amazing how few people are on the road at 10:30-11 p.m. Everyone is already where they intend to be for the New Year so the roads are empty and we are home before any craziness begins. Luckily it's not too bad in our small town - just one idiot neighbor down the road.
