I lived in NYC when I was 21 for four months and travel there often. I LOVE that city. Since it is the spring, the best areas of manhattan I thought were of course Time Square and Broadway. That is always a must...bars to drink at of course, but the best part I think of Time Squares is all the lights and people, and street performers, which is free of course.
Also you should go to the Statue of Liberty island, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with perhaps Ground Zero and Greenwich Village and Soho (which is the more artsy side of the city and has many interesting shops and LOTS of starbucks.
Also, shopping on Saks Fifth Avenue is fun, as well as visiting the Empire State Building for their tour of the tallest building.
Stay close together, don't lose each other, and make sure you keep important stuff close to you, like money and ID and tickets and such. Try to keep everything in a place where someone cannot pick pocket you (cuz they will if they can, but seriously, crime is not as bad as you think it is...just be smart about it.) Avoid trying to get scwindled on the streets by street sellers, those guys who try to sell you stuff, just keep walking. You probably won't see TOO many of them, (you may not even see any) but they can crop up sometimes.
My best suggestion to you is make note to travel by subway if possible, by a weeks worth of unlimited Metro Card use, and wear good walking shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking. Since the subway system can be VERY confusing to a new person, you might want to print a copy of one off of Google just to study and plan what routes you will need to take to go to your destinations. Overall, what a wonderful trip!! You and your bf will have the best time, and it will be a great adventure and bonding experience for the both of you. Best of luck and have fun! :)

here are three perfect "date" spots, one has cuban dance and cigar rolling plus excellent food, one is a chocolate lovers paradise, the other is italian and romantic even with garlic. they also have a little something to do like a carriage ride in Central park located very near by so you and the BF can have a romantic or just fun evening. the mojitos at the cuban are Killer and the music is so much fun.

The only handles we have here are:
* there are two of you coming, you & your bf
* you are over 21
* you are coming in the spring

We do not know a thing about you. We need to know more about you. Personally, I do not like making a shot in the dark, and my crystal ball loves to play pranks and joke with people, so that is out.

New York is a big city. There is such a thing as a One Size Fits All Unisex Unilateral Universal bunch of things to do in New York.... things that EVERYBODY loves to do, regardless of sex, size & shape, and orientation to the world.

In East Milanawkett, Maine there is one store and one gas station, so those two would be the must-see things there, but New York...... I mean, do you KNOW what you are going to be getting into ? Do you ? I don't think so. Write. Let us know wuzzup for your trip, ok?
