It depends on how well you take care of it. I've heard of budgies living to be about 10 years old, but this is very rare, because most people don't have a CLUE.
Budgies are so inexpensive, people think they're toys with feathers and buy them for KIDS who can't take care of a Barbie doll, much less a living, breathing animal.
Good food, clean water and a pollution-free environment (no scented candles or incense, no smoking of any kind, no aerosol air fresheners, no kerosene heaters) are keys to keeping your bird healthy and alive for as long as possible.

I'll second that 8-10 year span, but urge you that that's ONLY with proper care. I've had several budgies over my life and I can tell you that NONE lived that long due to accident or to improper care...though my last one lived to the age of 7.
The source is going to be important, too...a hand-raised budgie might not be any healthier than, say, a bargain budgie at your local chain petstore, BUT it will probably be more used to human interaction and more fun as a pet, and will inspire you to take better care of it.
