A pharmacist told me recently that housework is not classsed as daily exercise. I am a bit surprised at this because one has to burn up energy.

Depends on type of housework and how long you do it.
Washing dishes would use a lot less calories than scrubbing floors on hands and knees or removing cobwebs from 10 or 12 foot ceilings.
The more energy you use, the more calories you burn - most housework doesn't use as much energy as running, for instance - but if you do thirty minutes or more of heavy duty stuff [ makes you sweat ] then it definitely works!
Cleaning house in general uses about 136 calories an hour;
moving furniture - 273 calories/hour
mowing lawn - [ push power mower ] 250 cal
raking - 195 cal
shoveling snow - 273 cal
sleeping - 40 cal
PS: pharmacists are not fitness experts!

Housework is not considered exercise. Maybe if you jogged in place while you did it.

Maybe not as an exercise, but as physical activity towards the 90 minutes per day recommended by the FDA. It gets you on your feet and burns calories. Of course it depends on how much, how often and how strenuous your housework is.

Housework counts towards burning calories, but is not classified as an exercise. Including calories burned doing housework helps when you are counting your intake.
