because people are blinded by what they think and don't understand that they may NOT be right... they are close minded and ignorant and would rather attack someone than listen to and consider what someone else is saying with an open mind.

Any description of my own beliefs, if it is complete, will necessarily contain what some people would call "attacks." How else can I really explain it all?
For example, if I were to go into much detail on my beliefs about the communion of saints, but omit any sort of "attack" on Catholic teaching, many people would naturally assume that I believe and practice exactly like Catholics do--my beliefs and theirs seem that similar on the surface. It is only in contrast that the precise nature of my beliefs becomes clear.
Likewise, the so-called "solas" of Protestantism mean something quite different to Lutherans than to most other Protestants; and so in describing my beliefs on these topics I would be misleading readers if I did not contrast my beliefs to those of, say, a Baptist.
These "attacks" that people get so worried about are often nothing more than clear communcation.

There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus loves me. I try my best to just pass over mean-spirited questions posted by supposed atheists that are intended for the purpose of angering Christians.

Or as my favorite church line goes:
"Because, son, the real 'Word' is taught here!"
I've heard the above line at about 4 differant churches over the years.
There a certain: Be-us-or-Burn mentality to religion.
Sad...

It's human nature, and the subject has something to do with it. Many people would rather be RIGHT than understood or compromise.

Why is that necessarily a bad thing? Aren't atheists and Christians quite far apart on most of the questions that are asked here? Why do people always call it "attacking"? Why can't we just see it as argumentation? Do we need to pretend that we all agree in order to be "civilized"?

As an atheist, I've found it increasingly necessary to talk down to the target audience. Strangely, they either still don't understand, or choose to be ignorant. Either way, they perpetuate their own stereotypes in the process.

Most people (and religions) do not tolerate deviation or seperation from their way of life.
In most religions there is kind of a superiority complex.. and an absolute way of thinking that will naturally lead to debate and clear lines drawn.

It happens occasionally, but you have to sift through a lot of proselytization to find the nuggets.
