Simpler method of determining the right time to call...
Go up to her in school, and ask *her*... Now, since that option isn't available to you for another few days. Call her NOW!
Step #1: Apologise for not calling. Tell her that it took you a while to work-up your nerve to actually call her...which it apparently has.
Step #2: Ask her if she might be free next weekend sometime (trying to invite her out for tonight would sound too desperate and tacky, since you're not "together").
Step #3: Ask her when would be the best time to call should something come up. Make note of the times she tells you.
Please note, that until the two of you become more than "That Cute Girl" and "The Good-Looking Guy," trying to monopolise her time with phone calls would be border-line stalkerish.
In any case...good luck!

I agree with CuriousCat as if you are on good enough terms to ask for her number you must be on terms that you could ask her for a good time to call. But actually you can call anytime and ask if she is busy as you would be glad call back when it would be better for her. You could also offer her your number and a good time for her to call you. Courtship and relationships work best when things are equal.
I used to make a little reminder list of things to talk about so to avoid the silences. Homework problems, teachers you like, how you school teams are doing, clubs you belong to, how her parents and siblings are, stuff like that.
It does sound like you might be hesitating a little and I can remember that is common when first dating/courting.
It also sounds like she is very nice and she likes you so don't hesitate too long. You might be lucky and have found someone special. And vice versa.
Good luck to you.

Call her after school. If it is a bad time then she probably won't answer. The truth is the bad time to call her is never... just do it!

Well, I(as a girl myself.) would prefer to be called at about 7.00pm. Because by then, i will have had my tea, but not yet gone to have a shower.
Once you get to know her (if you are 17 years old or something.) It would be very romantic to be called up at 5.00am just so as you can tell her how much you love her.
:D

Well, 8pm usually works for me. I live on a farm and have lots of chores to do and I'm usually done and have eaten dinner by about 8 or 8:30. But, she may have a different scheldule. Just ask her what time if you have to.
Happy New Years!

Today should be a great day if you call before 4 or 5... almost no one is working and if you call in the afternoon she wont be at a party or getting ready for one. If you cant today then tomorrow will be ok too... just dont call before noon.

you should wait a day, to get her wondering, and then call in the afternoon and ask her to go out and get lunch or something
