I've wanted to get involved in the medical field assiting patients ever since my grandmother died in long term care, I saw how horrible their care could sometimes be and think people deserve better. I want to start looking into what I need to do to get trained for it but I have a lot tattoos on my arms, so I'm wondering would this make it hard for me to find a job in this field? I know times have changed but theres still a lot of ignorant people out there when it comes to tattoos, I wouldn't want invest so much time and money into it if I'm not even going to be able to get a job.

I think there are all kinds of people in the medical field. I shouldn't think that tatoos really make a difference one way or the other. You could always cover them up if you feel self conscious. If you are wanting to become a care aide or a practical or registered nurse. I don't think it will matter.

You can work in a long term care center even with all those tattoos if you have a CNA. They are in desperate need and cant get enough to fill all the positions. However it will be harder if you want to be a LPN or RN. These are seen as "professional" positions and tattoos don't fit that description. Even if the employer has an open attitude think about who you would be caring for. The elderly! They do not like tattoos and some would be outright frightened to see someone with them.

Best advice on the tatts? Make sure you cover them up. Better to have them removed. In these hard economic times most anything will kill your application chances as this is an employer's market. If you going into the medical profession, tatts convey an unclean element. They may look cute, but most medical facilities [even in the medical office environment] want them to be covered. On your second point, jobs are hard for everyone to come by. Many employers from Bible Colleges to Museums are letting people go. Have several back up plans or alternatives for employment. One who has a variety of skills will never want for a job. Truth makes one feel better in the long run. And, friend, this was the truth.

I disagree with the person that said the elderly will be scared of tattoos.

I'm a CNA. Tattoos, body piercing, hair dyed/cut any color is allowed. I work for a private nursing home that doesn't have as many rules as a hospital does. Many of the residents I've worked with this past just want a person that is NICE, COMES QUICKLY WHEN THEY RING, and DOES THEIR JOB WELL. The could care less about gender, race, or tattoos etc...Especially ones with dementia. That just isn't the type of thing they focus on.

Visible tattoos are not allowed while working in most health care settings. I work at a hospital and have a friend that has several large tattoos on her arms, she is not allowed to wear short sleeves.

Most people working in a hospital wear lab jackets year around anyhow, so don't let this stop you from entering into the medical field. There are dress codes in every job and so called "ignorant" people that believe that tattoos don't look professional. I will tell you that if you go to help little granny into the wheelchair and have skull tattoos all over your arms, she will judge and fear you.

I'd wear a long sleeved shirt for interviews that would cover the tattoos.
