i heard that spirits that people see are actually demons masquerading in the form of other peoples spirits. if thats true, then why is it that sometimes a day or night just before some people die, they say they saw a dead relative telling them its time for them to go? was it a relatives spirit or a demon they saw?

I have seen them. The reason why I do not think that they are people who roam the Earth after death is because one was a person who was still alive - my cousin. And other people in the family have seen it, who have said the same thing.
The others I saw were demonic. I am convinced of that. One manifested above me while I slept, I awoke just in time to rebuke it.
I think that the main reason why they are manifesting the way they are is to confuse the issues which are apparent in the Bible. If people roam the Earth after death, then there is a certain level of uncertainty involved with the subject of Life after Death.
So I believe these things to be typically demonic. Along with those apparent visions of Mary, especially if the Gospel was not preached by Mary. If she talked about praying with rosaries, or any other thing to the right or to the left of the Gospel, it was a demonic manifestation if it was really anything at all.
When I was younger I was like most young people, whatever I experienced I figured that everyone else experienced. But as I got older I found that most people did not experience what I had experienced. So now the types of questions that you ask is not so surprising to me.

it definately would have been a deceased loved one coming to take them "home". i dont believe in demons, as such, their just lost souls, trying to find their way.

I don't believe that there demons but angels, I olso think that the spirits or (ghost if you will) that we see are lost souls, seeking revenge or forgiveness, but there are demons out there,
