You asked something I've wondered for a long time! Where is the harm in living by the principles set forth in the Bible. Even other religions adhere to most of the same ideas our Christian Bible has. What do these laws restrict? I can follow the Bible and still do all the things I want. The Bible doesn't want me to cheat on my wife, doesn't want me to kill, or steal, or be jealous of those with more than me. The Bible doesn't want me to harm my body or others. Fundamentalists get extreme in their interpretation, and their ideas can be too restricting, but follow a moderate interpretation of the Bible, what can't one do?

"What is the real harm in doing what the bible say.?"
Yes, there's no harm at all in killing people for working on Saturdays. Or for sleeping with someone. Seriously, everything would be wrong with the world if it operated by the bible.

Jason;
Your pretty much correct in what you say.
But look at it this way ,a spirit who purposely miss-directs, most of the worlds population to their doom, is in actual control.
His influence has driven the people since the days of Adam and Eve. You see, when Adam sinned by disobedience, he turned over the ownership of the world to Satan, by default.
In your prayers, when you say God, unless you pray through Jesus as he taught us to do, the prayers go to the ruler of this world who is currently Satan,the devil.
So basically, most do not know who their God is. Our creator is known as Jehovah.
Yes Jesus was the instrument through which the world came into being, but it was Jehovah's will and holy spirit that Jesus worked with.

The basic "good" tenets of the bible --those sort of laws that the bible has governing human behavior--clearly these laws preceded the bible--where did they come from. Imagine one culture raping, pillaging, robbing one another. Imagine another culture who has found that by preventing people in that culture from robbing, raping, etc--the energy of that culture can be directed towards improvement of the position of the culture as a whole. These various moral codes have evolved --they are necessary for the survival of the culture itself. We have been following these "laws" for millenium because they are advantageous to a culture to do so.

The bible contains ideas that are good are replicating themselves (passed on from person to person and sometimes from generation to generation). That's why religion has lasted so long. However, just because an idea or concept can last for many years does not mean it is a good idea

if you take the bible's laws literally, there's plenty of harm. it's an antiquated document written for a specific group of people who, at the time, needed a rigid code of law to bind their community together in a hostile world. the new testament denies all other beliefs. if we were to do away with all the other religions, we would lose a lot of wisdom, and i would consider that harmful.
if you want to use the bible for your own spiritual development, that's fine. just don't expect everyone to accept it.
edit: batgirl, you probably got thumbs down because in matthew, jesus said that he came to uphold the law and the prophets, and because fundies are intent on legislating major parts of it.

The only major problem I have with organized religion is this. I find it sad that our so-called "advanced" society won't do the right thing just because it's the right thing, but rather has to face fear of punishment or reward after death.
I like to think people are not really that selfish.
