Maybe this short explanation helps you become aware how these two sounds are produced and therefore modify your speech.
Both sounds are plosive (you stop the airflow in the vocal tract and then suddenly release it with an audible 'explosion'). This holding of the air is produced by articulating both lips.
[p] voiceless bilabial plosive
[b] voiced bilabial plosive

The difference between /p/ and /b/ is the voice aspect. You say that a sound is voiced when there's vibration of the vocal cords, and voiceless when the pulmonic air flows through the glotis freely.

How can you notice the difference? Place your fingers to the sides of your throat or the front of your neck. Then produce a vowel sound. You'll notice some vibration there. That's because the vocal chords are involved in the production of the sound.

Now produce /b/ and you should feel the same vibration because it's a voiced sound.

Next produce /p/. You should not feel any sort of vibration at all since the vocal chords are relaxed and are not vibration.

That's funny, my Lebanese Arabic teacher came in one day upset about the botholes in the road...he of course meant the potholes. Don't worry, I still can't pronounce the 'ayn correctly. I sort of sound like I'm swallowing. To pronounce a "p", practice putting your lips together without applying too much pressure and just blow enough air to part them. If you apply too much pressure you will make a "b" sound. The "p" is much lighter. After you are able to part your lips with the air, try making sounds and forming words: pan, part, pen...good luck!
