Yellows or golds make a beautiful backdrop for black.
I suggest going to your local paint store and picking up some paint strips then viewing them in your kitchen with your lighting. Once you have narrowed it down, pick up a sample of that paint color to try it out before painting all the walls.

Hmmm, I'm thinking of a shade of med to darker olive green. Its a very in color now, and I love it. You can't go with light colored cabinets since the blacksplash is light, but you don't want to go to dark that the cabinets blend into appliances and counter top.Olive green is a nice choice because, though its a color, its still neutral. You could add to the intrest by destressing them, which would give them more character. if you plan on sanding the cabinets, it would make this easier, or you might actually be able to use the already there wood stain color. After you paint let it drie, then take a fine sander to the edges and corners, just enough that the stain shows through. If it was me, I'd beat the crap out of them before painting to give it a more authentic aged look. Also there is an aging paint you can put over top the finished paint, then wipe off and it leaves behind brown in the grooves and just gives things a really nice rustic flare.

Sherwin Williams has a color called "Rembrandt Ruby" that would look stunning in that kitchen.

I love the red idea. I also like a warm golden color in the kitchen, and with your black appliances, it will pop. You can't go wrong with the walnut, the black, and tying it all together with a golden background. Use some red as accents such as in towels or small kitchen appliances. Red is a happy color, but don't over use it. It will make you feel like you are just trying to be happy and covering up sadness. Good luck and enjoy! You can always re-do a paint color, if you end up hating it. So jump and experiment. Start with the little sample packets most hardware store offer. See where YOUR eye is attracted.
