I assume you mean in the UK? The analogue signal is slowly being phased out, leaving only a digital signal. Most new TV's are digital ready, but if you have an older TV which is analogue, you'll need a Freeview box, which can receive the digital signal and convert it to analogue, which your TV can show. ( A freeview box works off your existing aerial). I'm sure that if you Google "digital tv switchover" you'll get a more comprehensive answer.

You can. In the US at least, analog broadcasting will cease in Feb 2009. You can buy a heavily subsidized converter box for probably $40 or less to convert the digital TV to analog for your older TV.

There will still be free over the air TV after 2009.

Most of the world is going through a transition from analog to digital TV broadcasts. However digital TV signals can be cheaply converted to analog ones that older TVs can understand. Newer TVs already have a digital tuner built into them for receiving free over the air TV.

For older TVs it means that you will need a signal converter box between your antenna and your TV. In the UK these are called "Freeview" boxes. In the US they are usually called converter boxes or ATSC tuners.

The dates and details vary by country. In the US digital TV broadcasts use the same antennas as the old analog ones and the government will start handing out discount coupons on 2/17/08 that will let each household buy a couple of them for about $20 each. Since most analog TV broadcasts will end on 2/17/09, this gives people a year to sort things out.
