If you are writing an essay, it is supposed to be honest. Your honest opinions, or factual information. An essay isn't the same thing as a lie or a story.
To claim that your father died in Iraq when he didn't, that isn't an essay. That isn't an honest statement, and an essay is a person's honest telling of events and the honest opinions derived from those events.

I'd say that generally essays are true (non-fiction). If it was not true (fiction) it would be a story. Yes, an essay could be a biographical sketch of someone's life.

Depends on the essay. It could be an opinion based paper with supporting arguments, or it could an essay for a research paper in regards to factual information on a subject.
What's the assignment?
If it's a person then there would be a stimulating question to spark the essay, you use that to form your thesis and support it with information that you can document as not just your opinion.

If you write an essay, you have to state your very own opinion about something.
