There's a lot of attention paid to digital SLR cameras lately, especially on Yahoo! Answers, and among novice camera users. For most people, they're unnecessarily expensive and are overkill.

Because you're not that savvy about cameras (by your own admission), I'd suggest that this applies to you -- you wouldn't benefit from an SLR's extra features and price.

There are several good SLR-like cameras that offer a lot of features for the average photographer, but without all of the price and the need to buy so many accessories and lenses.

I like the Canon G9:

SLR is Single Lens Reflex. DSLR is Digital Single Lens Reflex. With this style of camera you are seeing in the viewfinder exactly what you are photographing. The invention of the SLR was a tremendous advance in photography.

The ability to change lenses to suit different situations or for creative reasons is also a major advantage of this style of camera. I can't imagine not owning an SLR.

A lot of people refer to SLR cameras as cameras that still use 35 mm film. DSLR cameras are digital, and do not use film. Those photos upload directly to your computer.
