Not really... toasting them just makes them hot and crunchy.

Well the tradition of a toast at marriages and the like is an ancient form of prayer anyway handed down to us by our european ancestors.

Same with the tradition of carrying the bride over the threshold.

It is tradition, but they should have both, the toast and the prayers of the people.

However, a toast that says, 'May you live in peace and harmony the rest of your lives, and bring up a lot of little ones that follow in your footsteps' is also a prayer voiced openly. God does hear.

There is no harm in doing both. God's only prohibition of alcohol is this: Don't get drunk! Don't be a legalist. Toasting the happy couple is merely wishing them well or blessing them. If you love them you will wish them well and pray for them!

Why not do both?

Neither is very effective at changing anything.

With regard to prayer... it is let THY will be done... and not let MY will be done.

When your marriage starts to break up you can always go back and drink yourself into loneliness.
