I answer mine when it is convenient, safe & appropriate. One of the conveniences of a cell phone is that it tells me when I do miss a call, and in any case the caller has the option of leaving a voice mail. (To echo your question, I would say that this is the point of these features!) There are many situations when answering my cell phone would be rude, unsafe, or inconvenient.

The purpose of phones in general are for the convenience of the owner. Do you jump up from the dinner table when the phone rings? Do you rush out of the shower when the phone rings? Do you let the person calling you run your life or do you run your own? Same with cell phones.

If it is convenient to ME, I will answer it. If it is not, I will let it ring and the person can leave a message. If, when it is convenient to me to listen to the message, I do so. If it is worth my time, I will call back. I got the cell phone for my convenience, not yours. If you want me to answer each time you call, you buy me a cell phone and pay the bills.

You must know my mother. But then, you also would have asked, "Why call somebody on your cell phone when you're not home, then not answer when the call back?"

I carry a cell phone for one purpose: the unexpected.

Accidents, road blockages. Unexpected events happen while you are on the road. If you have a phone you can call for help. The police. In these days, accepting help from a stranger could be the last thing you ever do.

The same reason I screen my calls through my answering machine and don't always pick it up even when I'm at home. A telephone exists as a convenience for the owner of it, not for the person making the call. As soon as you pay my phone bill, then you can dictate how and when I answer it.

My stepfather still doesn't know how to answer calls on his cell phone. He can only make calls so leaving a voicemail or trying to call him is futile. I tend to leave my phone on vibrate in my purse and forget about it for a few hours. Cell phones ought to be a convenience for the owner of the phone but no one should feel obligated to be tied to it.
