I have heard that the cost of food and drink is really high at Whistler Blackcomb compared to other ski resorts and was wondering if it was true?

Whistler Blackcomb is an EXPENSIVE resort, but well worth it. This is, IMHO, The Premier ski resort in North America. The exchange rate adjustments have not helped with the expense,(thanks George) The area is preparing for the winter Olympics in 2 years and have installed a peak to peak gondola so you can easily transport from one mountain to the other.
Expense aside it is a large resort, ski it early in the morning, and allow 1 hour to get from the base to the top. Because of it's size the upper lifts will close by 3:30 so the patrol can sweep the runs.
A mile vertical and runs up to several miles long make the resort similar to many European areas. The night life is also excellent. Hang the expense, go ski it. Enjoy, Jim.

You heard correctly. Whistler Blackcomb is very expensive - hotels, lift tickets, food and drink, you name it. It's an incredible place though!!

There are ways to keep the costs down though - eg. staying at a cheaper hotel or a B&B vs the PanPacific or Fairmont, packing granola bars vs buying snacks while you're on the mountain, etc.
